So, two eps of Real Drive, one ep of Library War, and one ep of Daughter of Twenty Faces, and I've found my three favorite shows of the season. Well, okay, those and Soul Eater. For shows.

Real Drive is gorgeous. The animation is IG's default style, which is my favorite <3 They've got the lovely SAC/Chevalier/Blood+/Seirei eyes and faces, and the beautifully detailed Seirei-style scenery, which the blend AMAZINGLY with the techier look of SAC's 'net setting, to create the beautiful Meta-Real Network, that manages to make the technological stuff like firewalls and digitized thoughts look incredibly organic. I love the representation of the internet as an ocean, and the people working within it as literal divers. Lovely Seirei-style fighting animation, very fluid. I love watching those kinds of fights <3

Best of all (I hope), this show is so different! I've got absolutely no idea where this whole thing is going, and I love that. Plus, the array of characters aren't who you'd expect them to be - you've got the hyper girl, the stoic bishie, the old man who's pretty damn hot when he dives into the network, and the old-guy who somehow DIDN'T age. I'm not entirely sure who the main character is, here. Real Drive seems to defy categorization and that makes it great so far <3

Plus, it's Shirow. I mean, come on, this has to be good, right?

The music is quite different. Very theatrical. I still wonder, though, who are the two at the end? The girl and guy? It looks like Souta and Holon, but I can't really tell...

And character design thought: who designed the girls, Gonzo? Those women have some hips on them, wtf? And one too many underaged panty shots for my liking, thanks. And the director that showed up on that holo-screen in the first ep - GONZO boobs! Dammit IG, I thought you were better than that ;-;

Oh, yeah and PLEASE IG NO MORE OLD MAN NUDITY.

I loved Library War, too. I don't think I've laughed so hard at a show in a while. The relationship between Kasahara and Doujo is going to make the show, I think. I really liked the odd chibi style, and the unique animation - it reminds me a bit of Tokikake. The plot has me a bit confused, though. If the government banned certain types media, yet also approved the creation of the Library Defense whatever, and allows the Media censors to go around randomly raiding bookstores, yet also allows the Library defenders to put those books under their protection? What? Who the hell is running that government? A split personality?

Other than that, the plot seems pretty typical (in the girl-emulating-her-mysterious-prince sense), and the characters, with their typical anime overflow of emotion, are easier to connect to than Real Drive's relatively more subdued characters.

Still, I like Kasahara and Doujo, and I'm a sucker for a good books-are-awesome-based story, so I'm hooked.

IG PLEASE, PLEASE don't do what you usually do and screw these up. PLEASE?

I randomly downloaded Daughter of 20 Faces, and though it's a bit odd and I've never even heard of it before, once again, I'm a bit hooked. It's...odd. Really odd. I can't describe it any differently than that, but I really enjoyed the first ep, wacky animation and all, (though I still wonder how big-headed girl is a "treasure"), and I'm gonna keep with it.

Flist to the rescue, please?

So, I might have, you know, put off certain aspects of a project for my research class. Like a survey. Haha, bad me. Really ;-; So I was wondering if you guys would rescue me? I need to basically turn in results for primary research, and while the internet might not be the ideal way to do that, I'm pretty sure it counts, kinda. Sort of. At any rate, I'd love you guys lots if you could answer some survey questions for me? It's nothing weird, I promise! This is due Sunday, so I'm worried, and I really dun wanna like, make stuff up, 'cause I think that would be cheating. So. Help? Pleeeease? *puppy eyes*

Questions:

How much television did you watch as a child?

What rules did (or, if you're younger, what rules *do*) your parents have about your television watching/game playing/computer usage?

How old were you when you got to see a rated R movie?

When you were a kid, did you think smoking was cool?

Did/do you think your parents have an accurate idea of what kind of media you were exposed to?

Do you feel you were influenced by the media as a child?

What do you think about the way kids are influenced by the media?

What do you think influences kids most? (tv, music, magazines, video games...)

Do you think media influence is a serious problem?

When/if you become a parent, do you think you will have rules for your kids regarding television/computer/game usage? If so, what?

So that's basically all. I would be so very grateful for your guys' help, and I'll screen comments, so, y'know, no sharing personal information. Anyway, basically all I'm supposed to turn in are the list of questions and names of people I surveyed, so...yeah. Anyway, that along with your name, and email, if you're comfortable.

Did I mention the grateful part? Cause I so am. HELP!

And out of nowhere comes a completely random declaration of love for Jane Austen, and Pride and Prejudice in general. I'm re-reading P&P because I ran out of other stuff, and oh, how I love this novel. Ye old wit is so much damn fun, and I love that snarky relationship that Elizabeth and Darcy have. *squee* When I read this a few years ago, I honestly did not think that it would be laugh-out-loud funny, but it really, really is. I especially love the awesome way Mr. Bennett makes fun of his wife, he's by far the funniest person in the book. LOVE THIS BOOK. I'm so damn hyped to watch the miniseries again (not that Keira Knightly crap... >>"), I would so do it if I had four hours to spare ;-; Colin Firth makes THE best Darcy. Ever. Period.

Oh, and I love my copy of P&P. I got it from the library for free when I worked there - it was all old and beaten (and printed in 1930), but I like having such an old copy. How do you beat them spelling choose "chuse", today "to-day", and connections "connexions"? I so didn't know that "connections" had an X in it~ :D

I watched Sense and Sensability, which I haven't read. I enjoyed the story (which was way more dramatic than the other Austen stuff I've read, P&P and Emma), but for some reason, everyone seemed really mis-cast. I totally did not believe that Hugh Grant would fall for Emma Thompson, or that Kate Winslet would fall for Alan Rickman (even though I totally would *.*). I've resolved to read it and see what I think after that. I've gotta say, though, I really liked Hugh Laurie's character, even though his role was small. He was funny as hell XD

...anyway, that's kind of all. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE IS AWESOME!

No, seriously. It's been an awesome week.

I got these, one after the other - Angela on Monday, and Clover and Tsubasa yesterday (I didn't even know Tsubasa was out, but I saw an ad for it in the new issue of Newtype - also part of what made this week great: KOBATO!!!! - and found it at work <3). I watched a little of Angela's concert, but it was awkward watching it in my brother's room (he has the only compatible DVD player) so I'm just going to steal it later and watch them in my room. I didn't watch Clover at all (;-; I want to...), but I did get a chance to watch the Tsubasa dub.

Okay, so it wasn't horrible. Really. Monica Rial isn't as terrible a Sakura as I feared, but nobody can capture the pure innocence of Yui Makino's voice, and, oddly enough, even though I didn't anticipate Syaoran's voice being a big deal, and his VA isn't bad at all, I missed Miyu's voice, too. Both he and Yui have an innocence in their voices that lends a lot to their characters - Monica and Syaoran's VA aren't bad at all, but neither of them sound as innocent as the seiyuu, so I felt like Sakura and Syaoran as characters lost some of that purity. lol, or I'm just weird. ^^; I dunno, I guess I thought of Japanese Sakura and Syaoran more as preteens with a sweet, innocent love (innocent meaning sex hasn't even crossed their minds) where as dubbed!SakuSyao seem more like normal teenagers with normal crushes (meaning I wouldn't trust Syaoran not to cop a feel of unconscious Sakura...). Again, I'm also weird.

Oddly enough, where I was first sort of terrified about Fye, Vic's dub of him was easily my favorite of the show. He's nowhere near as cocky-sounding as he sounds as Ed or Dark or Webber, in fact, I think he sounds a little too subdued as Fye. He hasn't really used much of Fye's sing-song happy-go-lucky tone, so Fye as a character seems more somber. Even when he was teasing Kurogane (btw, they compromised on the nickname thing - there was one American-ish nickname, "Kurgie" ><", and then "Kuropuu" and "Kuropon", I think. I was wondering how they'd translate that, since even the manga had a side note about Fye's nicknames...) Anyway, even when he was teasing Kurogane, he still sounded a little less sing-y than he did in the Japanese. Still, I liked Vic's dub, he did a pretty good job (he'd be perfect for cold, post-eye-loss vamp!Fye).

Kurogane sounded like a slightly less rough Piccolo. It wasn't...terrible, and I guess it was roughly the English equivelent of his Japanese voice, but I kinda wanted Kuro-rin to sound "cooler". Like Shogo *.* Shogo's voice is awesome! *swoon*

Mokona is a Tachikoma. And that's about as close as you're gonna get to an American Mokona voice *shrug* Not much of a suprise. Yuuko was so-so. She was appropriately serious, but I wonder how Colleen is going to handle drunken-tease-y-playful-Yuuko in the Holic anime series. Watanuki said approximately one word, so I dunno about him. I was disappointed, though! They didn't get Tony Oliver to play Sorata, and I was SO looking forward to that ;-; Instead, he's played by Jerry Jewell, Kyo in Furuba and Jimmy Kudo in case closed. I like him, but I miss Tony Oliver-Sorata <3 Fei Wong Reed was appropriately creepy, though.

Truthfully, the only thing that makes me twitchy is how they pronounce Kuro-pons name. KURO-gunay, emphasis on the "Kuro", the rest like an afterthought. It's supposed to be "Kuro-gon-e", right? That isn't just my imagination? But everyone does it! Yuuko, Fye, Tomoyo. ;-; It's annoying! And Syaoran is "Syao-ron", emphasis on the "ron". And Yuuko absolutely butchered Watanuki's name, I can't recall specifically how she pronounced it, but OMG WTF. Please tell me that's now how they're going to pronounce it in the Holic anime. Please. Can't they just listen to the Japanese version and try, just a little, to pronounce it that way? PLEASE? They also were a little off with Yukito (YuKEYto), but he's not in it much, so I don't really care. Also, I understand *why* they did it, showing closeness and all, but Sakura calling Syaoran "Syao" = kind of annoying. *sighs* What's wrong with using honorifics in a dub? Especially the common ones like "kun" and "san". I know they can be a little confusing, but it's easy enough to slip a little explanation in there, and it prevents the "Syao"s. ;-; Anyway, really, aside from that, it was a pretty good dub. Just...the pronunciations...*sigh*

Also, I was disappointed with the lack of Syaoran's desperate "PLEASE SAVE SAKURA-HIME" line. That was so classic in both the anime and manga! But now it's something way less desperate-sounding, like "She's a princess, please save her!" I know they have the mouth movements to consider, but it's such a mouthful to be saying at a desperate time!

Now I'm eagerly awaiting the Outo arc. I wanna know what they do with my beloved insert songs :X

Also, started watching Hana Yori Dango (anime and drama. so far, drama > anime) and Haibane Renmei. I really like both so far, Haibane Renmei is cute (and intriguing), and HYD is amusing.

I also read a little bit of Suki. Dakara Suki. again. Reading even a volume of that reminds me how much I absolutely adore Hina-chan. She's so cute and sweet and sincere and absolutely pure-minded. Hinata is officially my hero. That series is so cute, it's one of those CLAMP works that gives me warm fuzzies and makes me smile like an idiot. I demand an OVA.

Oh, yes, and one last thing - Itoshii Hito e by Sachi Tainaka, the ED song to Seirei no Moribito. Somebody build the fanlisting, please! It's so pretty <3

Speaking of which, APPROVAL FOR MASANE/RIHOKO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *tailwagx1000* DAMN YOU ANIKEI FOR NOT CARRYING EP13.
Wow. Just...wow. Lost. Damn it!

On the one hand, I'm so, so glad that Jin isn't dead. REALLY glad. I was afraid there for a minute after that thing with the walkie that they really did cut Bernard, Sayid, and Jin, but yay, they're ok! And Hurley didn't die! I was afraid after Sawyer rejected him he'd go out doing something heroic. So, basically, and the "four big deaths" were "three meaningless other deaths" + Charlie, which I was prepared for. It was still horribly sad, but I'm glad that his death was heroic and noble, and he had the chance to give that last message to Des. Stupid Patchy Cyclops bastard. Really, that man keeps coming back from the dead, they should have shot him in the head just to be sure. Doesn't ANYONE watch scary movies anymore?

And the flash-forward. Wow. I wondered when they showed Jack with a beard, because we seem to have covered every freakin' inch of his life already, and he's never had that beard. But after his ex-wife came to check on him in the Hosp., I figured it was just post-divorce angst. Then there was the end, with Kate. For a min., I thought he just knew her before (or her evil twin sister, mwahaha!), but then they acted like Jack and Kate, and it was...well, officially a flash-forward. Sonofabitch. I hate time jumps. HATE. Because people are never happy when you time skip. And Jack is proof of that, right? He's a big old drunk drug-addicted mess who WANTS TO GO BACK TO THE ISLAND. WTF. Things must be really, really bad for him to start talking like Locke, being Mr. We Were Never Meant to Leave, Let's Go Back. And he's not with Kate, but wants to be - how sad is that? It'd be fine if he just weren't with her, but he wants to be, how annoying. So much for J/J. Kate's probably with Sawyer. The dead guy? Probably Locke or Ben. Kate was so repulsed at the idea of going to his funeral, it's probably Ben. Either that, or Sawyer did something to really piss her off.

Speaking of Sawyer, that might be a possibility, now that he's gone all heartless killer on us. Maybe he spends the next three seasons steadily going crazy, who knows?

Seriously, though, now we know that the ending isn't happy. That's so disappointing and sad. So they get off the island, and what, our hero Jack self-destructs so badly that Kate won't take his phone calls? Honestly, it's the reality of the situation that's so disheartening. You know that, were they to be rescued, some of the survivors probably wouldn't keep in touch and maintain their current relationships, but at least if the ending was them riding a boat into the sunset, you can imagine that they would. Now, as previously stated, we know everything goes to shit for at least Jack, and there's no way to change it. How sad.

...I wonder if next season, all the flasback eps will be flash-forward. ^^;

So here's a question - can anyone recommend a good licensed shoujo / sweet comedy anime series? I'm trying to fill up my queue on Blockbuster.com with some good anime that my whole family will like, and I'm totally drawing a blank.

So far, we've watched & liked:

Fruits Basket
Tsubasa/Holic
ROD the TV
Nana
Ah My Goddess
Ouran
Fullmetal
Death Note
Gunslinger Girl

(ok, so not all totally girly, but you know...)

The only thing I've added so far is Serial Experiments Lain, and I'm thinking about adding Wolf's Rain, but honestly, I'd rather buy that... Diamond Daydreams is on queue, but there's a pretty long wait for the first vol (though we've recieved vols. 2, 3, and 4 just fine >>")

So anyway, any good shoujo/lovey recs are very, very much appreciated...

WTF CLAMP, they were BONDING. They were all emo and bonding and she was his princess and now he's STABBING HER??? I realize it was a curse and he didn't mean to do it (you can tell because his eye was all black which in manga means he was possessed), but COME ON. Is anyone NOT going to go evil? I feel like it's X all over again - whoops, there goes Fuuma. Oh, there goes Hinoto. Oh, Subaru. Whoops, Arashi. FUCK! FYE STABBED SAKURA. STABBED. This isn't eating someone's eye, this is STABBING. ;-; Why is CLAMP so cruel. Sakuraaaaaa... I know she (probably) isn't going to die, but this isn't great for the Fye/Sakura relationship that's been emo-ly building since the Tokyo incident. *dies* Stupid CLAMP. I was pissed when Syaoran went all evil, but damn.

What's all this about Sakura being stronger than Fye, anyway? I've got the same questions - isn't YUUKO stronger than Fye?
anime & manga rambles <3

Whee, so I got the latest volume of Read or Dream yesterday, it's been so long since the last, I almost forgot how much I love those Paper Sisters ♥ But that series is so awesome, it made me so happy I have their relationship fl ^_^ Poor Anita with two such hopeless sisters (maybe Michelle a little moreso than Maggie), she's my favorite character, I love how evil-looking she gets when she's pissed off at them and their books. While the series isn't big on arcing plot, this volume has one that is apparently going to extend to the next volume, where, similar to the anime, they go to Japan to protect the same writer they protect in Hong Kong, except that in the manga, the writer is Hisa-chan, not Nenene. It was so cute seeing Hisa and Anita together again, Hisa herself is adorable, and it was cute even seeing the Anne of Green Gables reference they slipped in in the chapter before Hisa's actual appearance. And that little kid that Anita's friends with <s>who should totally be her cute first love boyfriend</s> is adorable, too, I love how much he and Anita fight. The first chapter, with the 24 Faces of Maggie Mui, was great. Michelle never gets freaked out, but her expression at Maggie's behavior was hilarious. And dominatrix-Maggie was priceless, too <3 I LOVE THIS SERIES~~~

Reading it reminded me of how awesome ROD the TV was, and how great the dub was, too. Maggie and Anita and Michelle and Nenene and Hisa's voices were all so awesome! Why can't all dubs be that good?

Ooh, speaking of good dubs, watched ep 2 of dubbed-Chevalier, and LOL Durand's voice is SO pimp. The actor is just so-so, but his voice is so hilarious, omg. It's like they took the ED eyebrow thing and cast him based just on that. I was never a huge Durand fan, but his voice is just so appropriate XD Really, though, I think the Japanese casting affected me more than I thought, because after watching these episodes, I found that A) I don't think D'Eon is as much of a great big bitch as I did before, maybe because his American VA handles the angst more manly-ily, I dunno, and B) I don't want Anna to die painfully, I actually don't mind her at all. Maybe her VA is less whiney? I don't know why, but those things don't bug me like they did before. And oh, yeah, Lia's voice is great. Robin's VA is amusingly adolescent, I keep waiting for him to start singing "When it's time to change, you've got to rearrange..." XD

The script for ep 2 was a bit clunky at parts, a little corny sometimes (hearing Tellagory dub them "the four musketeers" is somehow more corny in English than it is in Japanese, don't ask me why), but thus far the series has actually managed to pretty well avoid the awkward phrasing that dub actors have to deal with, with the lip-syncing and all. Generally a very good dub, I'm happy it came out so well <3

Oh, yeah, and speaking of good dubs on anime on demand, I started watching Air Gear! Awesome. I thought I'd hate it, honestly. A show about extreme rollerblading? Seriously. Come on. But, I think, despite the borderline-retarded premise, Air Gear is a really fun show, two episodes in. I like the characters a lot, more than the premise of storyline, I really like Ikki and his insane roommates. Ringo is by far my favorite, she seems the most sane of the characters thus far XD, and I know it's way too early for this, but I'm totally shipping Ikki x Ringo. Simca reminds me of Haruko from FLCL, even some of her expressions, I swear. She's ok, but I like Ringo best ^_^ Ume's funny, and so is Mikan. Ikki's kind of a jerk so far, but I can't help but like him (I attribute this mostly to Chris Patton, because thus far it's absolutely impossible for me not to like anyone voice by Chris Patton). I really, really, REALLY want to watch more, but I'm reluctant to watch the Japanese version because I like the dub so much ^_^

The dub is AWESOME. It's really, really, really good. Granted, I don't have love for the Japanese version to prejudice me, but looking at the dub stand-alone, it's great. Of course, Chris Patton can do no wrong. I don't care what he's in, he has yet to suck. And him x Lucy Christen playing sort of love interests? GREAT. I love it when they're paired, it's like Kaname and Sousuke all over again XD Anyway, I really like both of them, plus, Hillary Haag is in it (doing her usual lisping child voice - I'm glad Lucy and Monica Rial (Simca) weren't stuck with that role, it's nice to hear Monica doing something different.), the only one missing to make the cast AWESOME for me is Vic Mignogna and/or Steve Blum. Add one of them and I'd be in dub fangirl heaven. Anyway, the dub is a huge part of why I like this series, so I'm reluctant to go hunt it down on the net :/ But they take SOOOOOOO long to release the dubbed DVDs, it sucks. ;-;

Finally YAY for Mary Elizabeth McGlynn for winning Best Actress at the American Anime Awards! Cause she totally pwns as Motoko <333 And BOOO for them casting someone else as Rangiku. I was really interested in the English soul society arc because of her, now I so don't care. (except I might peek in to see Vic Mignogna as Madarame Ikkaku. MAYBE.) Oh, yeah, and after hearing his voice again at the Tsubasa Cast announcement at the NY comic con (you can see a video of that here), I've fully accepted Vic as Fye. He doesn't have to sound all Ed macho - thinking about it, I can totally hear him doing Fye's sing-songy voice. I'm confident he'll do an awesome job as Fye. <3)

Oh, yeah, and I caved and bought ANOTHER Batou/Motoko doujinshi, this one by the same circle as my first purches (YAY 'cause that was PRETTY). It looks cute. ^_^ LAST DOUJINSHI PURCHASE FOR ME, DAMMIT. Also, I bought the Solid State Society fan/artbook-thingie. ;-; Because I need more scans, and the 2nd gig artbook was out of stock *hangs head* I'm a terrible impulse shopper. But that's all the purchases for me for a while! *resolute nod*

Thus finishes my weird fangirl ranting...

DAYS TILL ARIZONA TRIP: 3

Tsubasa and Holic Cast

So poking around on animenewsnetwork, I saw the listing for the Tsubasa cast. I kind of want to cry. There's just something not right about hearing this stuff, and it's kind of disturbing. So -

Syaoran: Jason Liebrecht {*shrugs* honestly, I have no idea who this guy is. ANN says that he played Alfonse Heiderich in the FMA movie, so that's not so bad, I guess. Honestly, Syaoran's not really who I'm concerned about - as much as I liked Miyu Irino, he doesn't exactly have a distinct voice, y'know? Kind of generically young boy-ish)

Sakura: Monica Rial (dear God, THIS scares me. Monica Rial? Seriously? WHY? All I can think of is her scratchy kid's voice from Case Closed and her squeaky voice as Kyoko in the FMP dub. NOT SAKURA. Maybe if she goes in slightly-less-subtle Kirika mode it'll turn out all right, but somehow I have the feeling she's going to go for cute and perky, and that doesn't bode well ;-; I'm sorry, but I have to say I kind of wish for Laura Baily on this one)

Kurogane: Chris Sabat (...unfamiliar with him, too. They say he's Armstrong in FMA (O_O) Ayame in Furuba (seriously, wtf), and Piccolo and Vegeta, among MANY other characters, in DBZ. Wow. This guy has to have multiple personalities, Armstrong, Piccolo, and AYAME? Just for that kind of diversity, I'm hoping he'll do all right. Like Syaoran-kun, Kurogane's voice was always kind of generically tough guy for me, so I think they did ok here. As long as he's not flamboyantly gruff like Armstrong, and plays it a little cooler as Kuro-tan, he should be ok, right?)

Fye: Vic Mignogna (OH. MY. GOD. Vic? VIC? Not that I don't absolutely positively love the man, but Vic as FYE? Vic has one voice, and that's so far from Fye. Fye's all flamboyant and girly-sounding, more like an English Ayame to me than an English Ed. I don't know, I like Vic, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt here, but I dunno...)

Mokona: Carrie Savage (Yeah, ok, it's IMPOSSIBLE to replace Mika Kikuchi as Mokona, nobody else is ever going to do as well as her with Moko-chan, but, as expected, she was replaced with a Tachikoma. Really, was there any doubt that one of the Tachikoma voices would get this role? Not really. Anyway, this one was also Nancy in ROD the TV (?), and Maromi in Paranoia Agent, so I suppose she'll do as well as any English person can with Mokona. But it will so never live up to the original...)

Yuuko: Colleen Clinkenbeard (umm...okay. I like her, and I think she's definitely a good actress, but weird choice. She's Esther from Trinity Blood, and Roze and Riza from Fullmetal. In Esther or Roze mode, no, she sounds too young, but maybe in a deeper Riza mode, she sounded very mature as Hawkeye, and that could work well for Yuuko-san. Maybe with a mix of the whole young enthusiasm thing and Riza's voice, I just hope she doesn't do her normal voice, Esther and Roze sound too nice! Eh, Sayaka Ohara's performance as Yuuko is just another one of those things that you can't replace in English. I thought she was dead-on, she WAS Yuuko, and I dunno if it's something Colleen can do...I hope so, though. You just can't do Holic and fuck up Yuuko :(

There are also a few other names down without roles attatched, Caitlin Glass (winry from FMA) and Mike McFarland. If I had to guess, I'd say Caitlin as Tomoyo (not a bad fit, though Maaya Sakamoto has such a sweet voice, like Yui Makino, she'll be very hard to replace), but I couldn't even venture a guess for Mike. He was Havoc in FMA and Ritsu Sohma in Furuba, so he's another one of those multiple personality actors. He could be anyone *shrugs*
